The Richards Trauma Process (TRTP)
Created by Judith Richards, The Richards Trauma ProcessTM (TRTP) is a comprehensive, eclectic therapy designed to resolve the causes of trauma related issues such as anxiety, fears, phobias, depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
TRTPTM is a structured and dynamic process that draws on elements from Gestalt, Mindfulness, Ego-state Therapy, Choice Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Parts Therapy, Emotion-focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dream Rehearsal Therapy and others – yet it is none of these.
The process creates a space where a client’s needs are met without the use of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) e.t.c. Instead, TRTP employs hypnosis to deal with trauma that is stored in the subconscious and in the body.
Many trauma experts (Levine, van der Kolk, Rothschild, Ogden) agree that in order to resolve extreme trauma the person must
- “somehow be moved to an empowered position in regard to the trauma” and
- “the body must somehow know that the event/events are over and that they are safe”.
TRTP is quick, effective and safe. It first addresses the underlying, unconscious core beliefs that usually sabotage therapy and then removes the emotional charge from the trauma which allows the person to return to a state of empowerment. Generally three to four sessions are required to move a person from their fright/flight/freeze (or victim) mode to an empowered state, one in which they know that the trauma is over and that they are now safe. TRTP process allows the autonomic nervous system to return to balance and calm.
