Neurofeedback – Now You Can Tell Your Brain What To Do

by admin on September 15, 2015

Your Brain Needs Training Too

There are plenty of gyms, equipment and personal trainers out there to help you train your physical strength. What if we can exercise the brain and increase its power just like training your muscles?

Many techniques have been discovered and developed by neuroscientists to let us manage and upgrade the performance of the brain and neurofeedback is one of the most popular techniques.

Neurofeedback involves monitoring brain activities and providing real-time feedback. Each task is different and depends on the training objective. In each session, the participant is assigned to increase their score by producing brainwaves within the set parameters. If the aim of the training is to increase focus and attention, the participant will need to increase their round scores. If the objective is to sustain their focus and attention, the rounds will increase in difficulty. How the participant manages to do this is not important, as long as they can make it change.

What Neurofeedback Can Help?

This technique is widely used to improve thinking competency, especially when the brain has difficulties or disorders such as depression or ADD/ADHD. With these disorders, the brain has trouble performing common tasks such as organising information and completing a task.

In a study to measure the achievement of Neurofeedback, it was observed that a patient suffering with depression who underwent eight Neurofeedback sessions showed improvements in executing tasks and an ability to think quicker compared to the control group who did not undergo Neurofeedback.

Not only did Neurofeedback improve the ability of patients to think and complete tasks, neurofeedback can also help boost the ability to deal with feelings and emotions which is helpful for people with depression and anxiety.

A section deep in the brain, called the amygdala, plays a crucial part in managing emotions. Disorders such as depression and anxiety is when the amygdala is hyperactive and exaggerates emotions such as sadness and fear. Neurofeedback can help normalise this activity by training the brain to decrease amygdala activity.
